So many good stories in this issue of \u201cThe World\u2019s Leading Mystery Magazine.\u201d You can subscribe or order individual issues online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few of my favorites from the May\/June issue of <em>Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine<\/em>, several of which had great can\u2019t-stop-reading opening lines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhat do you know about Kool-Aid?\u201d Clayton Ellicott asked. First line from Gregory Fallis\u2019s \u201cWhere\u2019s Dookie?\u201d An art world mystery, which, along with Michael Bracken\u2019s humorous \u201cBermuda Triangle\u201d about a missing musical instrument, prove that shenanigans in the creative fields are not limited to those perpetrated by us authors. Bracken&#8217;s long first line puts you right in the scene and in the mood: \u201cErica Witherspoon had asked to meet at Coda\u2019s, an upscale drinking establishment two blocks from the concert hall she managed, and I was sitting in a back booth finishing a gin and tonic when she walked in.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cPoor Betsy might so easily have perished, only she didn\u2019t. Her misfortune wasn\u2019t quite of that magnitude.\u201d From R.T. Raichev\u2019s \u201cBlind Witness,\u201d in which a crime writer is cleverly lured into involving herself in a real-life case, much against her better instincts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cStepping out of her car, Miuri feels a wave of despondency wash over her.\u201d In \u201cSeppuku\u201d by Genevi\u00e8ve Blouin, in which you get not only the cultural milieu of French-speaking Montreal, but also the Japanese cultural background of the detective and the sad, escalating crime itself, as foreshadowed in that grim first line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cFirst I saw that snake-green car, long and low and not quite Christian.\u201d In \u201cWhen Baptists Go Bad,\u201d by H. Hodgkins, a story that proves there\u2019s a solution for everything, at least in fiction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy Reading!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another winner!
