Last night I saw the documentary shorts and later today will see the live action shorts. These viewings are courtesy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/trentonfilmsociety.org\/\">Trenton Film Society<\/a>, which shows the films at the intimate Mill Hill Playhouse in Trenton. (The festival also offers the nominees in the animation category.)<\/p>\n<p>In recent years the short films have become available through Netflix and other resources, but I like the Big Screen\u2014well, the Bigger Screen\u2014at the Playhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Only one overworked word describes the five documentary shorts: Awesome.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 109-year-old Holocaust survivor, Alice Herz-Sommer (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/28\/world\/europe\/alice-herz-sommer-pianist-who-survived-holocaust-dies-at-110.html?_r=0\">obituary, 2\/27\/14<\/a>), who played the piano in Theresienstadt and was still playing at the time of filming, who says, \u201cI love people\u201d (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LrXHcQyixTE\">The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life<\/a><\/i>).<\/li>\n<li>A gay man, nearly beaten to death as a teenager, becomes acquainted with the former skinhead who was one of his attackers (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facingfearmovie.com\/\">Facing Fear<\/a><\/i>)<\/li>\n<li>The Yemeni protests that turned violent and led to the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, seen through the eyes of youthful cameramen (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AkSl0C_MuWU\">Karama Has No Walls<\/a><\/i>)<\/li>\n<li>Unlikely artist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.racavedigger.com\/racavedigger.com\/Ra_Paulette_Home.html\">Ra Paulette<\/a>, working alone and by hand carves magical caves out of soft New Mexico sandstone (<a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/60021037\">Cave Digger<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>The last days and death of convicted murderer Jack Hall in the loving care of inmate volunteers in an Iowa prison hospice (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/iYCL47ass7E\">Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall<\/a><\/i>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Real people doing amazing things.
