Its almost 200 pages included nine short stories and an interview with author Pinckney Benedict (after reading this interview and reveling in his awe-inspiring name, I bought his most recent book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.press53.com\/BioPinckneyBenedict.html\">Miracle Boy and Other Stories<\/a><\/em>; apparently, he\u2019s inspired <a href=\"http:\/\/mikrokosmosjournal.com\/wordpress\/?p=505\">other readers<\/a>, too). $19.95 from Benedict\u2019s hard-working small publisher, Press 53; $17.96 from amazon. The title of her novel, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Grand-River-Joy-Sweetwater-Fiction\/dp\/0472034294\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1403476994&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Grand+River+and+Joy\">Grand River and Joy<\/a><\/em>, Detroiters will recognize as an intersection, and far from being an uplifting statement, the book explores the city\u2019s racial tensions that exploded with the 1967 riots\u2014\u201ccomplex, challenging, and bitterly funny.\u201d On the \u201cto read\u201d list.<\/p>\n<p>Two stories\u2014\u201cWilderness of Ghosts\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janishubschman.com\/\">Janis Hubschman<\/a> and \u201cPatient History\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/creativewriting.uchicago.edu\/faculty\/harper\">Baird Harper<\/a>\u2014focused on young women troubled at leaping the chasm from late adolescence to \u201cwhat\u2019s next.\u201d \u201cGladstone,\u201d a charming story by <a href=\"http:\/\/marjoriecelona.com\/home.html\">Marjorie Celona<\/a>, nicely capture the skewed neighborhood observations and preoccupations of a group of 10-year-old boys.
