Ambiguity, betrayal, characterization, desire\u2014The ABC\u2019s of John le Carr\u00e9 are all in place and working hard in this new film <\/a>(trailer here<\/a>). The setting is the gritty port city of Hamburg, from whence much violence rained down on America\u2014and the dirty water of the first scene is the proper element for the dirty business to come\u2014and the real world<\/a> of espionage. I won\u2019t say more about the plot. Acting throughout is exemplary. Perfect music.<\/p>\n

(Must contrast this with the over-long, deeply implausible, and fundamentally boring Poirot mystery on PBS\u2019s Masterpiece Mystery<\/em> last night. What happened there? I get it that it\u2019s just supposed to be fun. Wasn\u2019t.)<\/p>\n

A Most Wanted Man<\/em> is both movie title and epitaph. John le Carr\u00e9\u2019s encomium is a must-read.<\/a> Rotten Tomatoes critics\u2019 rating: 90%<\/p>\n
