A question this month concerns friends who get \u201chundreds of likes\u201d for every photo they post and whether there is really any point in adding one\u2019s own tiny click, as it\u2019s unlikely to be noticed in that cricket-storm of positive feedback. Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Know-It-All dives into literature for his response by quoting a poem by W.H. Auden (1907-1973). Auden, contemplating the stars crowding the sky, recorded their sublime indifference to humans, which might lead one to think in the scheme of things, why bother with that \u201clike\u201d? Except that he continues to Auden\u2019s next verse, which says the caring imbalance between yourself and the firmament is inevitable, and if caring cannot be equal, then let \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poets.org\/poetsorg\/poem\/more-loving-one\">the more loving one<\/a>\u201d be you. \u201cBrilliant, right?\u201d says Mr. Know-It-All. \u201cThe guy really understood Instagram.\u201d So, pound that &#8220;like&#8221; button into stardust.<\/p>\n<p>And why rampant &#8220;liking&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2014\/08\/i-liked-everything-i-saw-on-facebook-for-two-days-heres-what-it-did-to-me\/\">doesn&#8217;t apply<\/a> to news outlets and ads on Facebook!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wired\u2019s Mr. Know-It-All\u2014a favorite feature of the magazine\u2014provides answers to the ethical and practical challenges of the digital age.
