Here are some ways to make this national event significant in your own reading life.<\/p>\n<p>Publisher Hachette <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/features\/bannedbooks\/\">provides a list<\/a> of its banned and challenged books (including <em>The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian<\/em> by Sherman Alexie, <em>Naked<\/em> by David Sedaris, <em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em>, by J. D. Salinger, and, yes, Harper Lee\u2019s <em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>). On its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HachetteUS?fref=nf\">Facebook page<\/a>, author Janet Fitch has posted a picture of herself with her favorite banned book\u2014Henry Miller\u2019s <em>Tropic of Cancer<\/em>\u2014and invites others to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Simon &amp; Schuster\u2019s call for Twitter users to photograph themselves with their favorite banned book has led to a collection of cute pictures with the hashtag #BannedBookSelfie. (<em>1984, Animal Farm, The Hunger Games, Perks of Being a Wallflower<\/em>). Last month I gave my friend J a bracelet made up of covers of banned books\u2014she should tweet a picture wearing it!<\/p>\n<p>Macmillan has seemingly thrown together <a href=\"http:\/\/page.macmillan.com\/fsg\/banned-books-week-2014\">a webpage<\/a> for the week that showcases its twitter feed and features rotating anti-censorship quotes from people as varied as Dwight Eisenhower and Lemony Snicket. It also includes nice descriptions of two of its formerly banned books\u2014<em>The Book of Three<\/em>\u00a0by Lloyd Alexander and\u00a0<em>Annie on My Mind<\/em>\u00a0by Nancy Garden.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"http:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/galleycat\/teachbannedbooks-hashtag-sweeps-twitter_b90894\">The Huffington Post asked teachers whether they include any banned books in their classes, and, if so, why, using the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/teachbannedbooks?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\">#TeachBannedBooks<\/a> hashtag, which has received an enormous Twitter response. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>An epicenter of BBW activities is The American Library Association and its Office for Intellectual Freedom. Its staff created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/bbooks\/bannedbooksweek\/events\/50statesalute\">50 State Salute<\/a>, with YouTube videos from each state showing how Banned Books Week is celebrated locally with Read-a-Thons and other activities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is Banned Books Week, that annual opportunity to contemplate the perils of censorship, with Huckleberry Finn right up there as an exemplar of that folly.
