Here are four literary-themed travel ideas, heavy on the mystery element:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>See the U.S.A.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written before about <a href=\"http:\/\/esotouric.com\/\">Esotouric\u2019s<\/a> fun mystery\/literary tours of SoCal. They scout out the locations of sites in classic books by Raymond Chandler (and other authors), researching \u201cthe mean streets that shaped his fiction\u201d and inspired such lines as &#8220;<em>There was a sad fellow over on a bar stool talking to the bartender, who was polishing a glass and listening with that plastic smile people wear when they are trying not to scream&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vweisfeld.com\/?p=3952\"><em>The Long Goodbye<\/em><\/a>. Next Raymond Chandler tour: 8-22-15.<\/p>\n<p>Not available that day? The following week the possibly even juicier \u201cHotel Horrors and Main Street Vice\u201d tour covers the history of the \u201cribald, racy, raunchy old promenade where the better people simply did not travel.\u201d Something always cooking there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/the-obsessively-detailed-map-of-american-literatures-most-epic-road-trips\">Atlas Obscura<\/a> has created an \u201cobsessively detailed map of American Literature\u2019s most epic road trips.\u201d Follow in the footsteps (or the oil pan drips) of such non-fiction bushwhackers as William Least Heat Moon (<em>Blue Highways<\/em>)\u2014I\u2019ve read this book, and it\u2019s great\u2014Jack Kerouac (<em>On the Road<\/em>), Mark Twain (<em>Roughing It<\/em>), and nine other classics that describe \u201cthis quintessentially American experience.\u201d Literature AND a map. Can\u2019t get much better.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/blog\/2015\/08\/13\/nyc-neighborhood-novels?hspace=313584\">NYC by neighborhood<\/a> from the New York Public Library.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Across the Pond<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In case you want something a little more, ahem, Continental, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/books\/article\/Two-bookstores-with-Bay-Area-roots-help-literary-6407617.php?t=483c8b83a90a4808f6&amp;cmpid=email-premium\"><em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em><\/a> has created a map that marks literary highlights of Paris\u2019s Left Bank and includes classic book shops as well as author pilgrimage sites. You can spend a day\u2019s worth of shoe-leather on this one, easy.<\/p>\n<p>Prefer a more sedentary mode of travel? By bus, perhaps (the big advantage of which is all that reading time and three beers at the pub, no problem!). The Smithsonian offers \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianjourneys.org\/tours\/mystery-lovers-tour\/\">Mystery Lover\u2019s England<\/a>,\u201d which explores \u201cthe lives and settings of famous detective novelists\u201d: Colin Dexter, Andrew Taylor, Simon Brett, Agatha Christie, and the like, plus the haunts of the characters they wrote about in Devon, the Cotswolds, Oxford, and London.
