For St. Patrick&#8217;s Day, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/blog\/7-contemporary-irish-authors-to-read-in-honor-of-this-years-st-patricks-day\/\">Barnes &amp; Noble<\/a> assembled a short list of contemporary authors who keep the country\u2019s storytelling traditions going. Here are three of theirs and two of mine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Colm T\u00f3ib\u00edn \u2013 \u201ca living link to Irish history,\u201d from his grandfather\u2019s arrest during the Easter Rising (its centenary is this year) to his father\u2019s affiliation with the IRA. Best known to American audiences is his novel <em>Brooklyn<\/em>, made into a wonderful 2015 film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vweisfeld.com\/?p=5217\">reviewed here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Neil Jordan, novelist and screenwriter (known best for the 1992 movie, <em>The Crying Game<\/em>). \u201cA clear, poetic style.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Tana French, the award-winning \u201cFirst Lady of Irish Crime\u201d is a master of twisty plots with deep psychological resonance. I read her <em>Broken Harbor<\/em> in 2013, and especially admired her unforgettable depiction of a mentally unbalanced character.<\/li>\n<li>Glenn Patterson, whose novel <em>The International<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vweisfeld.com\/?p=4219\">review<\/a>) has been called \u201cThe best book about the Troubles ever written,\u201d and it isn\u2019t about bloodshed and betrayal at all.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/vweisfeld.com\/?p=3995\">Adrian McKinty<\/a>, who also writes about Belfast and its residents and expats, <a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/adrian-mckinty-working-class-hero-of-irish-crime-fiction\/\">profiled here<\/a>. Great humor.
