The precise date of the first issue in 1941 is unknown, but it was fall, in a rather bleak time in history, with World War II raging and uncertainty everywhere. Three-quarters of a century later, <em>EQMM<\/em> still challenges and entertains!<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2f5DtxF\">Betty Fedora<\/a><\/em>, by contrast, is a new mystery\/crime publication, dubbed \u201ckickass women in crime fiction.\u201d Issue 3 arrived recently and contains a story of mine, \u201cBreadcrumbs,\u201d with the kickass woman in question a Michigan state trooper hoping to protect a young woman hiding from her abusive husband. She fears he\u2019s tracked her down.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my favorite stories from these two magazines\u2014writers I hope to read more from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_4581\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4581\" class=\"wp-image-4581\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/vweisfeld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/512px_Woman_reading_at_the_beach_converted.jpg?resize=290%2C186\" alt=\"reading, beach\" width=\"290\" height=\"186\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo: El Coleccionista de Instantes Fotograf\u00eda &amp; Video, creative commons license<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindabarnes.com\/\">Linda Barnes<\/a>\u2019s <em>EQMM<\/em> story, \u201cThe Way They Do It in Boston\u201d has great energy and atmosphere. She\u2019s the author of 17 novels and has collected numerous award nominations.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe Specialty of the House\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanley_Ellin\">Stanley Ellin<\/a>\u2014his first published story\u2014is reprinted from the 1948 issue of <em>EQMM<\/em>. Ellin was a novelist whose books were adapted for the screen, big and small. He was foremost a master of the short story, and this is \u201cone of the most famous crime stories ever published.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In this issue, perennial <em>EQMM<\/em> reader favorite (mine, too!) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davezeltserman.com\/\">Dave Zeltserman<\/a>\u2019s a.i. assistant Archie helps not his detective Julius Katz this time, but Katz\u2019s sister Julia elude a determined assassin.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prestonlangbooks.com\/\">Preston Lang<\/a>\u2019s <em>Betty Fedora<\/em> story, \u201cThe Sign,\u201d is a tale of double-double-crosses, launched by a decades-old sign in a seedy Manhattan bar that reads \u201cHardtack Coghlan doesn\u2019t pay for a drink.\u201d Has the real Hardtack finally walked in?<\/li>\n<li>Office speculation runs high about the true identity of dishy Rudy in the Louisa Barnes story, \u201cHer Colours.\u201d Rudy, she says, had \u201ca gift for insubstantiality.\u201d While the women fixated on him, was there really a spy in their midst?<\/li>\n<li>Colleen Quinn\u2019s story poses <em>Betty Fedora<\/em> readers an intriguing problem. In \u201cThe Game of Six Brothers,\u201d when the groomsmen at a wedding discover one of the bridesmaids is a private investigator, they challenge her to figure out which of them is a murderer.
