A diverse group in subject matter and national origin, though all European, this was one of the consistently best live action collections we\u2019ve seen. Here they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Sing<\/em> \u2013 a Hungarian film (<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/142948550\">trailer<\/a>) directed by Krist\u00f3f De\u00e1k\u2014what happens when a choral teacher bent on winning an important prize tells some of the children \u201cjust don\u2019t sing.\u201d Elementary solidarity (photo)! Charming. (25 minutes)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Silent Nights<\/em> \u2013 from Denmark (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r4WAzIt_V1M\">trailer<\/a>), directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awardsdaily.com\/2017\/01\/09\/interview-short-film-spotlight-silent-nights-interview-aske-bang-kim-magnusson\/\">Aske Bang<\/a>. A young Danish woman working for the Salvation Army falls for a poor Ghanian man, who neglects to tell her about the wife and kids back home. Wise words from her boss save her. Generous. (30 minutes)<\/li>\n<li><em>Timecode<\/em> \u2013 a 15-minute film (<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/165890547\">trailer<\/a>) from Spain, directed by Juanjo Gim\u00e9nez. The day and night shift security staff at a parking garage exchange the barest civilities as they change places, but find an innovative way to communicate. Hilarious! (15 minutes)(<a href=\"http:\/\/marvinwayne.com\/timecode\">watch it here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><em>Ennemis Int\u00e9rieurs<\/em> \u2013 this French film (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EG-FaK4KbmQ\">trailer<\/a>), directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/qualiafilms.fr\/eng\/ennemis-interieurs\/\">Selim Azzazi<\/a>, is a chilling display of how a suspicious government can twist even the most innocent statements into accusations. It takes the form of an interview between a determined policeman of Algerian descent and a French-born Algerian man seeking citizenship in the 1990s, during the Algerian civil war, with obvious application to today\u2019s tensions. Powerful. (28 minutes)<\/li>\n<li><em>La Femme et le TGV<\/em> \u2013 in this Swiss film (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MSRnal-xdjA\">trailer<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Awp4NMvJLes\">\u201cthe making of\u201d<\/a>), directed by Timo von Gunten and shot in one week, an older woman (Jane Birkin) waves at the TGV train morning and evening before heading to the desultory bakery she owns. When the train engineer tosses a note out to her, a correspondence begins. One day, the train does not come, and she must go in search of a less lonely future. Sweet.
