Ann Hornaday\u2019s book Talking Pictures: How to Watch Movies<\/a><\/em> might sound like a superfluous entry in a list of how-to-do-it guides. What prep do you need? Sure, you can just relax and let the movie experience wash over you, but Hornaday\u2019s deconstruction of the process makes viewing a richer experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hornaday, a movie reviewer for the Washington Post<\/em>, has organized the book usefully, too\u2014with chapters on screenplays, acting, production design, cinematography, directing, and various technical aspects. She approaches each review with the following three questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was the artist (the screenwriter, the director, an individual actor) trying to achieve?<\/em> <\/strong>Entertainment? Enlightenment? Not sure? A fluffy confection of a comedy can be just as satisfying and successful (often more so) than a serious drama. A movie hollow at its core can try to distract you with a glitzy surface and stellar cast. But if you find yourself saying \u201cwhaaaat?\u201d, a vague purpose or the cross-purposes of too many off-screen cooks may be at fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did they achieve it?<\/em> <\/strong>Here\u2019s where it\u2019s fun to see several versions of the same material, if you can. The 1996 and 2020 Emmas<\/em> (Gwyneth Paltrow and Anya Taylor-Joy) up against Alicia Silverstone\u2019s Clueless<\/em>. On successive nights, I watched Dangerous Liaisons <\/em>(1988) and Valmont<\/em> (1989). Same story, very different movies. Critics liked DL<\/em>, but I liked both, and Valmont<\/em> has the added allure of a young Colin Firth. Or the two excellent Truman Capote biopics (Toby Jones vs. Daniel Craig). Even a fresh conception of a familiar classic can succeed spectacularly: Caesar Must Die<\/a><\/em> is a documentary about prisoners in Rome\u2019s infamous Rebibbia prison being cast, rehearsing, and producing Julius Caesar. <\/em>Astonishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was it worth doing?<\/em> <\/strong>Now, there\u2019s a question. And, each of us will have different metrics for arriving at the answer. But if you\u2019ve ever walked out of a theater asking yourself \u201cWhy?\u201d perhaps it\u2019s because the answer\u2014at least for you\u2014was \u201cno.\u201d The Wolf of Wall Street, 1917, <\/em>and The Greatest Showman <\/em>were films that, for me, weren\u2019t worth the ticket price. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping these three questions in the back of your mind may help if you want to go beyond \u201cLoved it!\u201d or \u201cIt was crap!\u201d when you get the inevitable, \u201cSo, what did you think?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
