In this issue there\u2019s a nice mix of brand new and newish authors, as well as some of today\u2019s best writers of crime and mystery fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picking favorites is hard, but these stories particularly struck me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKiller Instinct\u201d by Doug Allyn\u2014a perennial reader favorite. Not only is his story set in my home town, Detroit, his first sentence made me laugh out loud. It\u2019s perfect for <em>EQMM<\/em>: \u201cThe traffic was murder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy People\u201d by Liza Cody \u2013 Her protagonist, an undercover London cop, is participating in a huge protest about climate change, sussing out the demonstrators\u2019 intentions. They welcome her; her fellow police are dismissive. As a result, she engages in an entertaining mental back-and-forth about which group is \u201cher people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Man from Scotland Yard Dances Salsa\u201d by John Lantigua. His Miami-based Cuban private eye is always interesting. Once again, he cleverly negotiates that tropical world of people with lots of dough and the bad guys who want to grab some of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Cards You\u2019re Dealt\u201d by Michael Z. Lewin \u2013 satisfying comeuppance of a full-of-himself police lieutenant, aided by some smart detective work and a sharp boy and his bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Man at the Window\u201d by Pat Black\u2014an intriguing police procedural about a dead mom, suspiciously swinging neighbors, and a tidy three-year-old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Photo:  Creative Commons License<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What fun to review this issue of \u201cthe world\u2019s leading mystery magazine\u201d and have the chance to reexamine its amazingly diverse stories, in numerous sub- and maybe even sub- sub- genres.
